Volkswagen India has launched the Tiguan . The SUV is available in two variants – Comfortline and Highline. The Tiguan Comfortline trim has been priced at Rs. 27.98 lakh, while the top-end Highline variant costs Rs. 31.38 lakh (all prices ex-showroom, Delhi). The Tiguan is locally assembled at the Volkswagen Group’s Aurangabad plant. The Aurangabad plant also manufactures Skoda and Audi models, except the Rapid.
The Tiguan is built on VW’s modular MQB platform. It is 4,486 mm in length, 1,839 mm in width and 1,672 mm in height. The wheelbase spans 2,677 mm, while the ground clearance is 149 mm. The SUV tips the weighing scales at 1,720 kg (with 90% fuel). The five-seater SUV offers 615 litres of boot space with all seats up, which can be expanded to 1,655 litres by folding the rear bench. The VW Tiguan is available in 5 colour options: Tungsten Silver, Oryx White, Deep Black, Indium Grey and Atlantic Blue.
At the front, the highlights include all-LED headlamps, a wide two-slat grille and a two-part bumper with body-coloured elements and a blacked out lower element. The air-dam features a honeycomb grille, there are faux intakes on the bumper and fog lamps with integrated static cornering lamps.
The Tiguan gets 18-inch alloy wheels (on the Highline variant, Comfortline get 17-inch units), lower body cladding throughout, wheel arch highlights, chrome highlights on the door, a strong line which extends from after the front arches all the way to the top of the taillights, chrome window surrounds and silver roof rails. From the body side of the Tiguan looks like a solid SUV.
The three-spoke Volkswagen-signature steering wheel, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, analogue-digital instrument cluster, paddle-shifters behind the steering wheel, drive-mode selector on the centre floor console, panoramic sunroof. The infotainment system is smartphone compatible with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, has USB and Aux-In media compatibilty and plays through 8-speakers.
Occupant safety is ensured by the standard front, side and curtain airbags, hill descent control, electronic stability control (ESC), anti-lock braking system (ABS), tyre pressure monitoring system, front and rear parking sensors and disc brakes on all four wheels. The Highline trim also gets a rear parking camera and self sealing tyres.
The VW Tiguan is powered by a 1,968 cc, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine that is mated to a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. Output figures of the 2.0-litre TDI unit are rated at 141 BHP @ 4,000 rpm and 340 Nm of peak torque @ 1,750 – 2,750 rpm. The Tiguan is also loaded with VW’s 4MOTION all wheel drive system with variable torque transfer to the rear wheels. The company claims a fuel economy figure of 17.06 km/l for the Tiguan diesel.
